  • Power BI, Snowflake Data Modeller
Greenfield opportunity for a Lead Data Modeller to shape enterprise semantic models supporting Power BI, Snowflake and governed analytics

The Opportunity

HCM Australia is recruiting a Lead Data Modeller for a senior, EL1-equivalent Federal Government contract. This is a greenfield opportunity to help establish and shape an enterprise semantic modelling capability supporting a new Power BI environment.

The organisation uses Snowflake as its data warehouse. The role requires strong semantic modelling capability across Power BI and Snowflake, together with traditional data modelling skills and the ability to work closely with data engineering, architecture, analytics and business teams.
This is an individual contributor role with no direct reports. You will join a broader data area of approximately 50 professionals across data engineering, architecture, operations, reporting and data modelling.

What You Will Do
  • Lead the design and governance of enterprise semantic models, certified datasets, KPIs and business metrics.
  • Translate complex business requirements into conceptual, logical, physical, dimensional and semantic data models.
  • Design enterprise-grade star schemas, including facts, dimensions, relationships, hierarchies and appropriate granularity.
  • Develop and optimise analytical models in Snowflake, including presentation-layer tables, views and complex SQL transformations.
  • Build reusable and scalable semantic models for Power BI and governed self-service analytics.
  • Define reusable measures, KPIs, calculations and business logic.
  • Collaborate with data engineers on source requirements, source-to-target mapping and modelling challenges.
  • Optimise model performance, including relationships, cardinality, filter propagation and database query performance.
  • Enable reporting and analytics teams to use governed models without duplicating business logic.
What You Will Bring
  • Extensive experience leading enterprise data modelling in large and complex environments.
  • Strong semantic data modelling experience, particularly for Power BI.
  • Hands-on Snowflake experience covering analytical models, presentation layers, complex SQL, optimisation and validation.
  • Advanced conceptual, logical, physical, ER and dimensional modelling capability.
  • Practical experience with ERwin or an equivalent modelling tool.
  • Source-to-target mapping and close collaboration with data engineering teams.
  • Strong knowledge of metadata, model documentation, naming conventions and governance standards.
  • Excellent workshop facilitation, stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
Highly Regarded
  • Experience working with cloud data platforms including AWS, Databricks, Snowflake, MS Fabric, Redshift or similar technologies.
  • Experience supporting enterprise architecture, data strategy or large-scale data transformation programs.
  • Knowledge of data governance, metadata management, master data management and data quality frameworks.
  • Previous experience working within the Australian Government or other highly regulated environments.
